T6 WHT and Astronomer

B9 William Herschell Telescope and Astronomer, Roque de los Muchachos observatory, La Palma

The William Herschell Telescope.

This telescope was built in 1987, and for a long time it was the biggest telescope in Europe. Like all really large telescopes, it uses curved mirrors instead of lenses, and the main mirror is a massive 2.4m (13ft) across, and the dome is five stories hi gh. On a good night it could see a candle on the moon. I had an office in this building for years.

As you can see from the snow, this was a winter day. The staff share cars up and down the mountain, and also to and from lunch at the residencia. This is Pete Bunclark, an astronomer, running because he'd kept us waiting for lunch. I like this photo because it give an idea of the size of the telescope.

The telescopes are only open to the public four days a year. See the observatory's web site for details. IsaacNewton Group
