When I heard that the road outside our house was going to be closed for a go-kart race, I was picturing loads of very noisy karts snarling past. Frankly, I was congratulating myself that it was due to finish at 7pm. One year the regular rally went on until midnight, and the noise drove me crazy.

But this was great – motorless karts rolling down the hill, some cheap and cheerful, some more elaborate, and some quirky. We all fancy joining in ourselves next year.

  1. Not that dangerous. The hill is steep to begin with, but much less so later. The ones where the “driver” was really exposed went at walking speed, and the fastest ones (I’ve seen push bikes go much faster) had the driver more protected. And everyone wore helmets.

But not totally safe, I must agree.
