Sunday Photos: The Sardine’s funeral

Carnival is pretty much over, but it went out with a bang. Well, lots of bangs. Saturday night was the Sardine’s funeral in Los Sauces.

I don’t know why carnival ends with a sardine’s funeral, but I do know that it’s lots of fun and the one in Los Sauces is the best.

Like most carnival events, many people come in costume. The sardine’s funeral usually has a Halloweeny theme. (Although the group of people above came as tins of metal polish).

The funeral procession winds through the town and ends in a cremation with lots of fireworks. I have some video of that but no still photos.

So the party’s over and it’s back to work updating the Spanish edition of the observatory guide book. Not much longer to wait until I can get back to killing people.

(In the novel, of course.)

Sheila came to La Palma with a six month contract and has stayed 24 years so far. She used to work as a software engineer at the observatory, but now she's a writer and Starlight guide.
