The Sardine’s funeral in Los Sauces, 2015

March 1, 2015

Last night was the famous sardine’s funeral in Los Sauces. As usual, there were lots of amazing costumes: some ingenious, some cheap and cheerful, some extravagant, many humourous.   It’s traditional to serve fried sardines, and very tasty they are too.               One group brought along this amazing fairy tale coach. They were inviting children to have their photo taken in it. Being a…

Photos of El Llanito’s Sardine’s funeral, 2012

Here are some photos of the sardine’s funeral at El Llanito. As you can see, the sardine itself is much smaller than the one in Los Sauces, but I love those bee-stung lips! Unlike most places, the bier was carried by the sardine’s widows. Like most places, the widows were very tall and muscular. There’s a long tradition of political protest at carnival. And on Saturday at 9:30 pm, Los Sauces will be holding their sardine’s funeral, with a…

Santa Cruz de La Palma’s funeral for the sardine is a comparatively quiet affair (note “comparatively” – I think more people went to the costume dance on Saturday). It was still fun. The procession started with two of the sardine’s widows (posh-looking transvestites) followed by the Batuka (serious percussion) and jugglers, a fire eaters and a man on stilts. Next came the sardine itself, hand-carried by about ten men in…

The Sardine’s Funerals 2011

Poster for the Sardine in Puntallana, 2011
March 17, 2011

How many funerals can you hold for a sardine? On La Palma, at least five. Los Llanos and Santa Cruz have already held theirs, but Puntalllana’s is on Friday night at 10 pm, and it’s got a 1960s theme. Public dance afterwards. The most famous sardine’s funeral on the island is at Los Sauces. This year it will be on Saturday 19th, with batucada (serious percussion) at 8 pm, drag…
