Tuesday with Tim

Tuesday was great too. I took the journalist, Tim Johnson, into Santa Cruz, where he bought a T shirt. Then we went to Las Nieves and thence to San Andres (via the usual viewpoints) to stuff ourselves at Restaurante San Andres. I love their fishballs!

After that we did a short hike in Los Tilos, and went round the north along the Mimbres road to Hoya Grande, and up to the Roque. Now, I’d wanted to get Tim inside a telescope, but it’s hard after midday, because the astronomers are preparing for the night’s observing. This was 6 pm, so I thought it was impossible.

But I managed to get us into GTC anyway, because another small goup was visiting so we could tag on. Tim was suitably impressed by the huge telescope, but I think he enjoyed the sunset from the Roque even more.

And then, of course, I had to drive down 200-and-something hairpin bends in the dark, but it was worth it.

Sheila came to La Palma with a six month contract and has stayed 24 years so far. She used to work as a software engineer at the observatory, but now she's a writer and Starlight guide.
