As you’ve probably heard, asteroid DA14 is going to pass very close to the Earth tonight.
No, there is no chance that it will hit, which is good because it’s about 40 m in diameter. But at its closest it will be just 28,000 km away, closer than the highest satellites (although still well above the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope. It’s going to part our hair.
You won’t be able to see it with the naked eye because it’s as black as coal and the size of a basketball seen from a distance of 100 km.
It’s too early to be sure but the dramatic fireball over Siberia is probably a completely different asteroid. It was 16 hours earlier (that’s about 500,000 km away from DA14) and seems to have come from east to west (look at the rising sun in the video). DA14 will arrive from south to north. It’s not clear how big the Siberian meteor was, but the shock wave broke windows and 900 people were injured, about 100 of them hospitalised.
At the moment, it seems to be just a very big coincidence that we get two in one day. Lots of people thought it was a missile, and a local nationalist leader claimed that it was an American weapon. So I’m very, very glad that this didn’t happen during the cold war. It might have started WWIII.
As it is, I hear people are joking that the meteor was supposed to arrive on December 21st (you know, the Mayan “end of the world”) but the Russian postal service is so very slow that it only arrived today.
