Los Indianos 2012

Los Indianos in The Plaza Espana,

Today Santa Cruz de La Palma will be covered in talc.  Los Indianos (People from the Indies) celebrates Palmerans who emigrated to Cuba or Venezuela in search of a better life, and came home rich.  So we all dress up in white, with the ladies in Gone-with- the-Wind dresses and parasols, and the men wearing Panama hats, and for some obscure reason, we throw tons and tons of talc at each other.  Literally tons.

The party starts at about 10:30 am, and officially goes on until 6 am on Tuesday, although there’s sure to be a few stragglers still having fun at 8 am.

People drink a lot of alcohol (traditionally rum and coke or mojitos) but I’ve never seen any violence and only heard of it happening once.   But please don’t drink and drive  (and be warned that the police will be out with their breathalysers).  The timetable for special buses is here.

Enjoy!
