Sunday photos: shelves and Llano de las cuevas

Llano de las cuevas, El Paso, La Palma island
April 18, 2021

I’ve begun sorting out the balcony for summer. It’s a great spot to sit, or at least it will be again with a bit of work. I have a nice patio table and chairs, lots of plant in plant pots, and there’s an amazing view. The trouble is that the junk does collect over the winter. This year I bought some shelves so that I can store all the empty…

Sunday photos: willow catkins and a bee

Canary willow catkins
February 17, 2019

I’m doing lots of tour guiding and steadily working on the book, but I made time to go out for a photo stroll with a friend. Oddly, the best pictures of the day came when I stopped at the visitor centre on the way home.

Glitter stones

July 22, 2018

I went for a walk at Llano de los Jables, near to where I found the tiny, red plants just before Easter. The landscape was stunning, especially the cloud waterfall. Rock Art

A wet, spiral rock carving at La Zarzita, Garafia, La Palma island
November 24, 2015

I’ve been having fun hunting up the local rock art with an archeologist from Northumbria. There’s lots of it, but while the rock art from the North Pennines is about 5,000 – 3,000 years old, the Palmeran art is much newer at 1,200 – 500 years old. We went to El Verde near El Paso cemetery, where most of the carvings line up with midsummer sunset or midwinter sunset (well,…

Stargazing in El Paso

The old moon in the arms of the new, Virgen del Pino, El Paso, La Palma
April 21, 2015

On Monday and Tuesday I showed a journalist around for the Tourist Board. On Monday night we went stargazing with Astrolapalma. I loved it. Agustín was very enthusiastic, and now I understand why people enjoy my enthusiasm so much. We started off just after sunset, and we had a lovely view of the old moon in the arms of the new. That’s the poetic name for when you can see…
