Fiestas in early September, 2012

There are two nice fiestas coming up at the beginning of September. In El Paso, the fiesta in honour of the Virgin of the Pine will carry on until September 2nd, when there will be a concert in town followed by a special mass, procession and public dance up at the hermitage above the town. Video of the fire in El Paso

This video was taken in Monday 16th. The fire was officially under control by 2 pm on the 18th, and then another column of smoke scared everybody to death again, but it was dealt with very promptly. Meanwhile, the police are investigating the possibility of arson.

Fire in El Paso

A forest fire is burning near Montaña Quemada in El Paso. The last I heard, it had burned 400 hectares and the fire-fighters were trying to keep it inside the lava flows which form a natural fire-break. 100 people have been evacuated from Tajuya, Piedra Blanca, Juliana y La Moradita, and the old tunnel through the Cumbre had been closed (the new, lower tunnel is bi-directional). The Sacred Heart 2012

It’s the Sacred Heart fiesta in El Paso this weekend, where they make archways and beautiful salt carpets. Here’s a few photos. These panels and archways area around the church and old church, and the street leading downhill from there. And the church gets decorated too, this year with pink calla lilies.
