My Favourite Dragonfly

On Friday night San Jose had a drag queen fiesta, and my husband took the chance to dance on stage. He’s been out in carnival with this costume and got great feedback, but this was the first time he performed on stage. So now he has a stage name, “Libelula” which is Spanish for dragonfly.   The other two artists performing were  “Señorita Clarita” and “Alexandra López”. I thought they were all very good.

Halloween

Halloween is not a traditional Spanish fiesta. Ten years ago, it was something the children learned about in English classes. But you know, kids love a chance to dress up, and they especially love an opportunity for legalised begging,(and I was just the same). Corpus Christi in San Jose

The village of San José celebrates Corpus Christi on the Sunday after Mazo. Traditionally, the carpets are made out of dyed sea-salt, although lately some groups use petals, leaves and seeds as the do in Mazo. This was my favourite carpet, although it’s hard to chose.

Corpus Christi 2014

Catholics all over the world celebrate Corpus Christi, but in Mazo each district of the municipality makes an wonderful archway with a carpet and a little altar decorated with petals, leaves and seeds. The archways go up overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, and stay up until Sunday. You can read more about this and see archways from previous years here.

An accident in Tijarafe fiesta: UPDATED

There was an accident in Tijarafe during the devil’s dance on Saturday night. There was a bigger crowd than usual, since it was a weekend. The devil tripped and fell over. That meant that the fireworks would be squirting horizontally instead of straight up. The emergency services managed to get the helmet-with-fireworks off the devil which sounds very brave. Indeed, the head of the unit had to go to hospital…
