Photos of the week: retama del pico

Retama del pico, Spartocytisus supranubius,

Spartocytisus supranubius or Cytisus supranubius is the broom which grows above the clouds on the peaks of La Palma and Teide. They’re coming into flower now, and I love the touches of pink before the flowers fully open.

This morning I was up at the observatory to show a group around Gran Telescopio Canarias and I took the chance to photograph the broom. Somehow this turned into yet more photos in my series of “Bugs on flowers”.

I have no idea what the insect above is, althought he onebelow is a bee. Look at all that pollen it’s collected in its knee pouches.

But my friend Michi took the best photo.

Sheila came to La Palma with a six month contract and has stayed 24 years so far. She used to work as a software engineer at the observatory, but now she's a writer and Starlight guide.
