On  on 5 and 6 June 2012, the planet Venus will pass in front of the sun in what’s called a transit. The last one took place in June 2004, and the next one won’t happen until December 2117.

If you’re in the USA or Canada, the transit will be in progress at your sunset on June 5th. If you’re in the UK or Germany or North-east Spain, the transit will already be happening at your sunrise on June 6th. The bad news is that we won’t see a thing on La Palma – the transit will take place in the middle of our night.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN OBSERVING THE SUN.

Sheila came to La Palma with a six month contract and has stayed 24 years so far. She used to work as a software engineer at the observatory, but now she's a writer and Starlight guide.
