Sunday photos: fungi

It’s rained quite a bit this last week and the island is juicy again. That means lots of fungi in the woods. I found this tiny one near Pared Vieja . I never noticed the bug on it until I started taking photos.

Both the fungi and the bug are seriously tiny. I took a photo with my fingertip for comparison.

The photo below is a blusher, Amanita rubescens, again from near Pared Vieja.

The week zipped by pretty quickly, partly because I was busy with Christmas preparations and partly because much of Thursday and Friday was a Zoom meeting for Starlight guides, teaching us about the huge new Chrenkov Telescope Array. The only bit of it that’s been built so far is the Large Sized Telescope but there will be lots more telescopes in another ten years or so.

I got an Hono(u)rable Mention in the smaller of last week’s contests at On The Premises. No money, but it’s a confidence boost. My story for the next competition is down to the right length and slowly improving. I’ve got until Tuesday.

Sheila came to La Palma with a six month contract and has stayed 24 years so far. She used to work as a software engineer at the observatory, but now she's a writer and Starlight guide.
